OUTREACH EVENT

Shelter 2, Taman OUG
15-16 November 2008

Outreach ShelterA1 Team Malaysia has once again reached out to aid the less fortunate through its second Outreach program which took place on the 15th and 16th of November. The team joined forces with Shelter Home Organization to combine the exciting world of motorsports with the fun of painting one of Shelter's care homes which houses abused and abandoned teenage girls.

Shelter is a registered welfare organization, and it was set up in June 1981. The charity is guided by the vision of giving children at risk a childhood and future by protecting guiding and healing them, and by building strong communities and loving families.

Shelter's services and initiatives are aimed at providing care for abused, abandoned, neglected or at-risk children through their homes and through counseling and therapy. It also aims to proactively raise public awareness on child abuse, parenting and youth issues, and equipping individuals with relevant skills to detect signs of abuse and to take action.

The whole A1 Team Malaysia, together with a number of volunteers, who were mainly fans of the teams came round and helped to redecorate the interior and exterior parts of Shelter 2 as well as fixing the home's broken furniture. In addition, the team had organized for a new part of the house to be built to house a laundry.

The mechanics, engineering, administrative and marketing personnel from A1 Team Malaysia all gathered at Shelter 2 on Saturday morning before Mr. Owen Leed, the Commercial Director of A1 Team Malaysia briefed them about the jobs that need to be done at the home where he later divided them into teams and assigned them to their respective stations.

The highlight of this Outreach event was the special appearance of the two A1 Team Malaysia drivers, Fairuz Fauzy and Aaron Lim on Saturday afternoon to meet and greet the girls of Shelter 2 and also give the volunteers an opportunity to meet their idols in person. Apart from that, the drivers also did not miss out on joining in the painting effort to express their contribution to the needy community.

On Sunday morning, the team returned to the home with another set of volunteers to resume the remaining works left over from Saturday evening. The team also took the opportunity on this day to celebrate the birthday of one of the team members, Darren Bandy, with the young ladies at Shelter 2 presenting Darren with two cakes!

The girls were overjoyed to see how the national racing team and its volunteers committed themselves to revamp their home. The Home Manager of Shelter 2, Ms. Anne said, "We are really happy to have the team here. Without the help from the team and the volunteers we wouldn't know when else will we get the chance to see this home getting a major facelift that has been so desperately needed".

The painting and refurbishing works were completed late Sunday afternoon and it was wrapped up with a group photo of the team members, the volunteers, the girls of Shelter 2 and the home staff. Everyone, especially the girls and the staff of Shelter 2 were extremely satisfied with the outcome that followed the huge effort the team and the volunteers had put in to fixing up the home.
